Thunderbird: Free email client similar to Microsoft outlook. It is very simple to use and setup. It supports both web based and pop3 email providers.
Open Office: Complete package consists of word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics and databases. It supports all Microsoft format comes in various languages.
Gimp: Image processing software, it supports almost all formats available out there. You can use it for photo retouching, image composition image authoring. It has tablet support if you are a graphics designer.
Blender: Industry standard 3d software, you can create real like 3d graphics for fun or for small projects. It also has various video and audio editing capabilities.
Games: Ubuntu come pre installed with various small relaxing games.
You can take Ubuntu test drive before actually installing it. Ubuntu installation is very simple and there are various installation options available:
• Install it as the primary OS.
• Install it in dual mode i.e. alongside Windows and you can choose the OS during boot.
• Install it in a virtual PC running on a windows system.
Although all major software companies release their software for both windows and Linux but some software are windows specific. Ubuntu has a large community base to provide support and ad on features.
